Brief Bio

Dr. Sarantis Gagos got his bachelor degree in Biology from the University of Patras, Greece. He received his PhD in Cancer Cytogenetics from Athens Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, in 1993. The same year, he was appointed Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Cellular Genetics, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas, Houston, USA (Directors: T.C. Hsu, S. Pathak). In 1994, he joined the Kleberg Cytogenetic and Prenatal Diagnosis Laboratory at the Department of Human and Molecular Genetics, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA (Director: L.G. Shaffer). Dr. Gagos was enrolled in Baylor’s postdoctoral training program for the American Board of Medical Genetics (Director A. Beaudet). Dr Gagos was certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in 1996, as a “Clinical Cytogeneticist”. Sarantis Gagos was the first researcher to join BRFAA in 1998, as Investigator level D. In 2002, he was promoted to Investigator C (Assistant Professor), and took a 12-month sabbatical to the Division of Medical Genetics, University of Geneva Medical School, Switzerland (Director: S.E. Antonarakis). In 2003, Dr. Gagos was appointed Associate Director of the Laboratories of Clinical Cytogenetics and Molecular Diagnostics in the Division of Medical Genetics of the University Hospital of Geneva. Dr. Gagos returned to BRFAA in 2004, as a Primary Investigator. From 2014 he was promoted to Principal Investigator (Associate Professor). In 2016, Dr. Gagos was certified as a “Clinical Laboratory Geneticist” by the European Board of Medical Genetics. From 2012, Gagos group provides specialized clinical and research cytogenetic services at BRFAA. Current research of Gagos group is focused on chromosomal instability and the basic mechanisms involved in recombinatorial telomere maintenance in fertility, development, ageing and cancer.
