Brief Bio

Dr. Manolis Mavroidis studied Biology at the University of Patras, Greece, from where he graduated in 1991. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Patras, Greece in 1997. From 1992 to 1994 he worked as Research specialist at Medical School, University of Pennsylvania, USA in Dr’s J. D. Lambris laboratory, where he contacted the experimental part of his thesis, in the study of the complement system. His post-doctoral studies initially were conducted at the Division of Hematology and transfusion Medicine, Medical School, University of Patras Greece (1998) and then at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA (1999-2002) in Dr’s Y. Capetanaki laboratory studying the role of intermediate filament cytoskeleton in cardiomyopathy and heart failure development. He was appointed (2003) as Researcher D (Lecturer) at the Cell Biology Division in the Center for Basic Research of the Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens, Greece.

His research is focused in studying cardiomyopathy/heart failure development trying to identify targets for intervention and biomarkers of the disease. More specifically using the desmin deficient and other cytoskeleton related cardiomyopathy mice models, he tries to elucidate:
    
1) At cellular level, the role of the muscle specific intermediate filament desmin in the structure/function of cardiomyocyte structures like intercalated discs and z-discs and their role in the development of dilated cardiomyopathy.
2) At cardiac tissue level:
a)    The role of inflammatory reaction (innate immunity) in heart failure development.
b)    The role of cytoskeleton in cardiac conduction system structure and function and its role in arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.
