Brief Bio

Andreas Papapetropoulos received his bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of Patras (Greece) and earned his PhD in Pharmacology with distinction at the Medical College of Georgia (Augusta, GA). After completing his graduate training he moved to the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale University as a postdoctoral fellow. In 1999, he returned to Greece, joining the Faculty of the University of Athens as Assistant Professor of Pharmacology in the School of Nursing and become group leader in the “George P. Livanos” Laboratory at the Department of Critical Care and Pulmonary Services of the Medical School. From 2003-2013 he served as Associate and later as Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology at the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Patras. He is currently Professor of Pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Athens. He serves on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Pharmacology and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis & Vascular Biology and has refereed for over 50 international journals. He is board certified in Pharmacy and is a European Medicines Agency expert. He is also a Fellow of the American Heart Association and a Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society.

His research is funded by intramural, national, European and international agencies; he has received >2,5 million € for his research in the last 10 years. He has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals that have received >6,700 citations. He has trained 5 PhD students and 9 postdoctoral fellows.  He frequently reviews for national granting agencies from Europe and Asia.

Andreas Papapetropoulos has studied the physiological functions of the nitric oxide/cGMP pathway and its contribution to disease initiation and progression. He has explored the therapeutic potential of modulators of the NO/cGMP pathway in cardiovascular and lung disease and has studied the pharmacology of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) activators and stimulators. More recently, he has shifted the focus of his research to the role of hydrogen sulfide, a new gaseous mediator, in the vasculature.
