Obituary for Professor Charles Thomas “Tom” McElroy 02/03/2026

With great sorrow, we were informed of the loss of Tom McElroy, a dear friend and eminent scientist. Tom was a distinguished Canadian atmospheric scientist whose work profoundly shaped global understanding of the Earth’s atmosphere. A leading figure in his field, he devoted his career to studying the ozone layer and advancing the tools needed to monitor and protect it.

As co-inventor of the Brewer ozone spectrophotometer, Tom helped create the scientific foundation for accurate measurement of ozone depletion worldwide, strengthening international environmental policy and cooperation. He also co-developed the UV Index concept, providing clear, practical guidance that helps millions make informed decisions about personal sun exposure for health protection.
Over decades of pioneering research, he introduced innovative methods to measure ozone and other atmospheric gases from ground stations, aircraft, and satellites, enhancing the accuracy of global environmental monitoring. Respected for his intellectual rigor and appreciated for his humility, mentorship, and generosity, he inspired students and colleagues alike.

Tom McElroy’s legacy endures in laboratories, monitoring networks, and atmospheric reports around the world. Particularly the Greek community of Brewer spectrophotometer operators keeps warm memories of his friendship and devotion in installing the first Brewer No 5 outside of Canada in Thessaloniki, an instrument that has continued operating uninterruptedly from the early 80s to today. He installed No 5 at the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, University of Thessaloniki, and has kept collaborating with us for the past 4 decades. We will always remember him as a visionary scientist, devoted teacher, and compassionate colleague whose work continues to support efforts to protect the planet for future generations.

Εκπαιδευτική Περιβαλλοντική Ημερίδα

Την Τρίτη 27/02/2024 πραγματοποιήθηκε στο ΙΙΒΕΑΑ και το Κέντρο Επιπτώσεων του Περιβάλλοντος στην Υγεία, μια ειδικά διαμορφωμένη Εκπαιδευτική Ημερίδα για την Περιβαλλοντική Ομάδα του 2ου ΓΕΛ Καλυβίων (Λαγονήσι).

Οι μαθητές παρακολούθησαν, με μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον, παρουσιάσεις αναφορικά με τις δραστηριότητες του Κέντρου και είχαν την ευκαιρία να συνομιλήσουν με τους Ερευνητές για μια σειρά από θέματα που αφορούν στο Περιβάλλον, την Κλιματική αλλαγή και τις επιπτώσεις στην Υγεία όλων μας. Τα παιδιά εξέφρασαν τις απορίες τους αλλά και την αγωνία τους για το μέλλον, δημιουργώντας ένα ενθουσιώδες και παραγωγικό περιβάλλον συζήτησης.
