Facilities

The Laboratory of Biomechanics is equipped with a fully automated inflation/extension device and a uniaxial tensile-testing device (Vitrodyne V1000 Universal Tester, Liveco Inc, Burlington, VT, USA), which together with a specialized laser scan micrometer (LS3100, Keyence Corp, Osaka, Japan), are particularly suited for the examination of the in vitro mechanical properties of biological tissues. The uniaxial tensile-testing device has been used in a number of research protocols, concerning the study of the aorta’s mechanical performance in health and disease states. The inflation/extension device has been used thus far for material characterization of soft tissues from the cardiovascular (arteries, veins), gastrointestinal (esophagus, small and large intestine), and urinary systems (ureter).
