Brief Bio

Spiros Georgopoulos is a biologist, Researcher-Associate Professor at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens, where he is in charge of the Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory and the Transgenic Core facility. He is a graduate of Biology in Athens University where he also obtained his Ph.D. degree for his thesis on TNF-a and rheumatoid arthritis at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute in Dr. George Kollias laboratory. He continued his post doctoral studies in Boston at Boston University (Boston University Medical Center) and Harvard University (Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Brigham and Women’s Hospital). In 2002 he was elected Assistant Professor at the University of Thessaly from where he resigned to accept the position of Researcher in the Academy of Athens.

Spiros Georgopoulos has mastered genetic approaches using genetically modified mice to understand the pathogenic mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease. His scientific work is widely renowned for the identification of the role of cholesterol related genes in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. His laboratory is supported by competitive grants from national sources and the European Commission, as well as by the pharmaceutical industry.

Spiros Georgopoulos has been appointed as a national member in the Joint Programme in Neurodegenerative Diseases and has also participated in the organization of different actions in neurodegenerative diseases in Europe. He is a reviewer in International scientific journals and National, European and International Funding Organizations. He teaches in post-graduate courses in Athens University and graduate students that have received training in his lab continue successfully their research activities in Greece and abroada
