Brief Bio

Athanasios G. Tzioufas is a Professor of Pathophysiology and Rheumatology of the Medical School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He received his degree in Medicine from the School of Medicine of the University of Ioannina in 1983, where he also completed his Ph.D in 1989 and his Board of Rheumatology in 1994 (under Professor H. M. Moutsopoulos). During 2006-2007 he served as a visiting scientist in National Institute of Health in the U.S.A.

In 1997 he was elected as an Assistant Professor and in 2003 as an Associate Professor of the Medical School of the University of Athens. In 2010 he was unanimously elected as a Professor of Rheumatology and Immunology in the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, serving also as the Director of the Clinic and Laboratory of Pathophysiology (2011-2022). During that time, he and his colleagues established Centers of Expertise for Autoimmune and Autoinflammatory Diseases in Laikon General Hospital.

Professor A.G. Tzioufas has organized a numerous of scientific meetings, including the 11th International Symposium of Sjogren’s Syndrome (2011), Summer School of Immunology (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016) the Joint Scientific Meeting with Johns Hopkins University(2010). He coordinates the joint Rheumatology Academic program of the University of Athens and he is in Steering Committee of the intradepartmental educational program in Rheumatology. He is a member of numerous scientific committees in Greece and abroad. He is member of the Editorial Board in 6 peer reviewed Scientific Journals and a reviewer in another 30 scientific journals. For the last 3 years he had been the President of “Sjogren’s Syndrome” of the American College of Rheumatology.

Professor Tzioufas has supervised or co-supervised more than 30 PhD dissertations in NKUA and participated in the examining committee in more than 40 PhDs in Greece and abroad. He has more than 450 publications in international Peer Reviewed Journals and books with an h-factor 86 and more than 31500 citations (Google Scholar). He has given more than 200 lectures as an Invited Speaker in scientific conferences and Universities in Europe, USA, Latin
