Brief Bio

Dr. Marinos Metaxas is a Medical Physicist. He was born in Athens in 1970 and studied Physics as an Undergraduate Student at Imperial College, Institute of Science, Technology and Medicine in London. In 1993 he graduated with Honours Degree and went on to do his MSc Course in Medical Physics at Surrey University in Guilford, England. Having completed his military duties in 1996, he moved to the USA where he worked as a Clinical Scientist for Photelectron Corp. in Lexington MA. He acted as the duty Medical Physicist in the Feasibility Study of the Intrabeam System in treating Stereotactically Brain Metastatic tumours. This study was undertaken at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and paved the way for the FDA approval of the radiosurgery system.

He then moved to the UK where he worked for the same company in establishing the aforementioned technique for the Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT) of the Breast. This led to the 3rd Phase fully randomized International Trial (TARGIT_A) where the once-off single fraction IORT was compared to the conventional post-surgery Whole Breast Radiotherapy. He chaired the International Targit Physics Group and was a permanent member on the International Targit Steering Committee. Alongside he enrolled at the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering at University College London as a part-time PhD student (Title: Source Localisation and Dose Verification of a novel Brachytherapy System). In 2004 he was awarded the doctorate and continued to work at UCL as a post-doctoral research Fellow at the I-ImaS project (FP6–NMP2-CT-2003-505593) until its cessation in 2007.

He was then appointed at UCLH NHS Foundation Trust in the Radiotherapy Department as a Band 7 Clinical Scientist until 2010 when he permanently moved back to his native country Greece.
From 2011 he has been working at BRFAA as a Medical Physicist acting as the Radiation Protection Officer at the Centre of Clinical, Experimental Surgery and Translational Research
