Brief Bio

Dr Aristotelis Chatziioannou holds a Diploma from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), since 1996. After working as an Engineer in Industrial Consulting in Germany (IAS Mannheim) with emphasis in the optimization of maintenance tasks in plant production lines, he begun his postgraduate studies in the School of Chemical Engineering, NTUA in 2001, earning his PhD in Metabolic Engineering and Bioinformatics in July 2005. From 2004 till September 2005, worked in parallel as a postdoctoral fellow in BSRC Alexander Fleming, Vari Greece, where he developed the first computational pipeline for multi-layered transcriptomic analysis in Greece to support the interpretation of the microarray facility of the center. In February 2006 he was appointed Research Lecturer and Group Leaded of the newly found Metabolic Engineering and Bioinformatics Group of the Institute of Biological Research & Biotachnology of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens, where he served till June 2020 having being promoted to Assistant Professor (2009) and Associate Professor (2013) during his tenure. Since July 2020 serves as Investigator (Professor) at the Center of Systems Biology of  the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. AC has been particularly active in the field of technological innovation, being the cofounder and CEO of e-NIOS Applications PC, a spin-out SME, in the area of intelligent Big Data analysis of complex biological data. His research interests include In-Silico (virtual modeling and algorithmic development) Systems Biology, Knowledge-Mining and Cognitive Computing in Life sciences, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in Biomedicine, Biostatistics, Metabolic Engineering, and Biomedical Image Processing. He has served as Invited Professor during 2012-2013, for CNRS and INSERM at Bordeaux, France, in the area of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology. He has authored or coauthored more than 250 journal and international conference papers in these fields (h-index: 23, i-10 index:44 source Google Scholar). He has supervised 21 Phd Thesis and 18 Diploma projects He has participated in a coordinating role, in more than 20 European and National Research Grants, (7 through e-NIOS Applications PC). He has also actively contributed in the strategic planning of research policies and their harmonization with the European and International Framework as Vice President of the Hellenic Union of Researchers (2 tenures, 2009-2015), and two tenures in the Board (Vice President) of the NHRF Personnel Association. He has been member of the Panel of Experts of the Hellenic National Committee of Research and Innovation (2016-2017) with the mission to elaborate a National Roadmap for Research and Innovation in Greece and Substitute member at the Board of the Hellenic State Foundation of Scholarships till July 2020. During 2018-2019 he served as member of the Board of GR-NET, the Hellenic National Infrastructure for Scientific /Tech Computing. At present, he serves as Treasurer of the Administrative Board of the Hellenic Society of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics and as Deputy Technical Coordinator and Deputy Tools Platform Coordinator in the Hellenic Node of ELIXIR (ELIXIR-GR).
