Brief Bio

Dr. Dimitrios P. Sokolis obtained his B.Sc. in Physics from Imperial College of the University of London, UK in 1993. He received his M.Sc. in Engineering and Physical Sciences Applied to Medicine from the same University in 1994, studying mathematical models of convective & diffusive transport processes of macromolecular substances in the arterial wall.

He received his Ph.D. from the Medical School of the University of Athens in 1998, upon examination of the mechanical performance of the aortic wall in health and disease. He received his Ph.D. from the National Technical University of Athens in 2002, having classified systematically and in mathematical terms the elastic materials of the various symmetries. He was a post-doctoral fellow in the Institute for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the National Academy of Athens in Theoretical Mechanics, and the Laboratory of Experimental Surgery of the University of Athens Medical School in Biomechanics.

His major research interests focus on the biomechanics of the cardiovascular system, aiming at determining the mechanical response and structure of organs, tissues, and cellular systems of the cardiovascular system in health and disease; the application of techniques for the analysis of structure, such as optical microscopy and stereology; and the assessment of structure-function relationships. He is particularly interested in soft tissue, organ, and cell biomechanics, namely in the constitutive laws of soft tissues; the biomechanical analyses of cells, membranes, and sub-cellular structures; and the growth-remodeling responses in soft tissues. He is also interested in the mechanics of anisotropic materials (biologic, crystalline, composites). He has published 43 papers in International and 11 in Greek Journals. He has presented 48 papers in International and 72 in Greek conferences.
