The Bioexplore project focuses on the comprehension and industrial exploitation of marine microalgae bioprocessing utilizing modern bioanalytical tools.

The aims of the project include:

  1. Establishment of methodologies and technologies for the mass production of high quality microalgae

  2. Application of proteomics, metabolomics, catalomics and transcriptomics in order to identify genes and high added value molecules (enzymes, lipids, antioxidants, polyamines etc) in microalgae cultured under different conditions

  3. Identification of the underlying reasons for the beneficial effect of microalgae in the early life stages rearing of marine fish and the optimization the fish larval rearing protocols using microalgae with customized biochemical profile

  4. Establishment of new algal expression system for the expression of therapeutic proteins (e.g. antibodies and antigens) offering an attractive alternative to traditional mammalianbased expression systems, as the production of proteins in algae has an inherently low cost of capitalization and production.
