Center of Experimental Surgery
Director: Prof. Panayotis Karayannacos, MD, PhD

Scientific activities of the Center are focused in studies on animal models of various diseases and novel therapeutic interventions. Development and testing of new surgical approaches is implemented. The main interest is on experimental atherosclerosis, on hemodynamics and on the role of fluid mechanics on arterial diseases. The Center also serves as an animal facility for FBR's multidisciplinary research protocols, providing in parallel, educational programs on the code of ethics and the proper use of animals in Biomedical Research.

The Center is comprised of the following divisions:

Laboratory Animal Facilities: The facilities accommodate a large number of animals of various species used as experimental animal models, as well as genetically engineered animals including knock-out and transgenic. Animals are housed and raised under strictly controlled environmental and hygienic conditions according to the animal welfare standards set by the European Union, the Council of Europe, the United States Department of Agriculture and the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Surgical Operating Suites: Surgical procedures and surgical approaches are performed under strict aseptic and antiseptic conditions, using the proper anesthetic and analgesic approaches. The surgical suites are fully equipped with instrumentation for hemodynamic studies as well as to allow all different kind of surgical operations to be performed.

Biomechanics: Basic and applied research for investigation of the mechanical properties of living tissue, organs or systems; understanding of cardiovascular function; determination of soft tissue mechanical properties at the macro, micro and nano levels.
